Physical destruction by shredding gives total confidence in data sanitization and eliminates the chance of data recovery. After all, what information can you recover from thousands of pieces? At the same time, shredding makes recycling more complex and less likely, because it gets in the way of recovering materials further downstream.
Environmentally conscious clients may choose secure erasure for storage media that does not hold highly sensitive information, so the equipment can be recycled for its materials or refurbished for a second useful life.
For example, a customer might choose an erasure method (Secure Erase or Cryptographic Erase) for Apple MacBook Pros from late 2017 onwards, which have soldered-on storage and memory. The choice there is between physically destroying the entire device's circuit boards, or securely erasing the storage drive.
