Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The 3Rs, in order
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are terms we often hear. Did you know they are in order of priority?
1. Reduce
Use only what you need and reduce waste.
Organizations can extend the life of assets and equipment where possible, reducing the waste generated.
2. Reuse
Use things again, for the same or a new purpose.
Working parts such as RAM, LCDs, keyboards and power supplies can be recovered to repair and refurbish other devices.
3. Recycle
Turn waste into useful products.
Circuit boards and metals are processed to extract resources, instead of mining them from the ground.
Following the 3Rs protects the environment, conserves limited resources, reduces the space needed for waste disposal facilities and extends the lifespan of landfills.
What needs to be sanitized during recycling?
Storage media includes solid state drives, hard disk drives and other storage types. These need to be evaluated and categorized to set the level of sanitization required (Clear, Purge or Destroy), according to the organization's data classification.
For information with a high security categorization, storage media should be destroyed. For lower classifications, NIST SP 800-88 Rev 1 allows media to be cleared or purged, documented, and then recycled instead of destroyed.
More on security categorization: NIST SP 800-60 Rev 1. FIPS 199 sets security categories based on the magnitude of harm expected from a compromise, and organizations can use it as a general principle.
Our e-waste sorting and recycling process
Every item that arrives at Databyte Solution is sorted to maximize reuse and recycling.

- ConditionWorking equipment is set aside for reuse; working parts are stripped from non-working equipment as spares (reduce).
- Material typeHazardous materials such as batteries and toner are removed. Metals and circuit boards go to material recycling (recycle).
This process maximizes what is reused and reduces the waste generated. Parts and materials that cannot be reused efficiently are disassembled and sent to dedicated facilities for material extraction and recycling. Only materials that cannot be recycled are sent for incineration and landfill.

What should be reused and recycled?
Machines, equipment and parts with no built-in memory or information storage can and should be repurposed or reused. This includes laptop, desktop, server and networking hardware once storage media such as hard disks, SSDs and flash memory cards are removed.
Some storage cannot be removed, such as storage chips soldered onto certain Apple machines and other manufacturers' newer devices. Depending on the sensitivity of the data, the choice is then to securely erase and purge the data on the machine, or to destroy the device's circuit board by shredding.
For these devices, we reuse and recycle as many parts as possible that are certain not to contain any information, such as LCDs, keyboards and chassis. They are used to repair and refurbish other devices, extending their life before they enter the waste stream.
